A personal defense weapon (PDW) is a compact, lightweight firearm designed for use by
military personnel, law enforcement officers, or civilians for personal protection in
situations where a full-sized rifle may be too large or cumbersome: lightweight, easy to
carry, and maneuver in tight spaces. PDWs offer ergonomic features such as folding
stocks, retractable stocks¹, or pistol style braces. PDWs are capable of firing handgun
and more powerful cartridges, providing increased stopping power and range.

inch barrel length, delayed blowback, and direct impingement depending on caliber)
